What is Althea Projects about and

why is it so important to Townsville

When families are not supported in times of need, children and young people cannot reach their full potential.   Althea Projects works with all families with whatever crisis they are facing to ensure each child has the best possible opportunity at childhood.

Althea Projects operates from two main service areas:
Shared Family Care – Foster & Kinship Service
Wee Care Family Support Service

Our Shared Family Care service supports children who have experienced neglect, emotional, physical or sexual abuse or any combination and require care through Fostering programs. Foster Carers provide a safe and caring environment for children, aged from birth to 18 years, who require this sort of out of home care. This can be for a few days, weeks or several years. Foster Carers provide an invaluable volunteer service in the support of these children and young people.

Shared Family Care is a program which recruits, trains, assesses and supports Foster Carers in the Townsville/Burdekin and Charters Towers region. Fostering can be a challenging yet rewarding way to contribute to the community. Our program assists Foster Carers to navigate the challenges and provide the upmost care that the traumatised children need.

Our Wee Care Family Support service provides respite and emergency accommodation for children aged 0-11 years while supporting the whole family to stay safe, strong and out of the child protection system.  We provide families with access to Playgroup, education and training, support, respite accommodation and emergency relief funding. Most importantly Wee Care is a non-judgemental, safe place where all families are welcome in the good times and the bad.

The New Direction

The name change from Wee Care Family Inc. to Althea Projects Inc. brings together 40 years of grass-roots support to families and children in the Townsville community and sets our service up for an exciting future.

Althea Projects is humbled and proud to be continuing to support children and young people to reach their full potential through our existing programs but also in new and innovative ways. This new direction will allow our organisation to better respond to the needs of Townsville families; partner with a range of government, private and philanthropic investors in a way that builds on our greatest assets - our people.

Foster and Kinship Carers Service

Fostering can be a challenging yet rewarding way to contribute to the community. Our program is there to assist Foster Carers to navigate the challenges and provide the up most care that the traumatised children need.

Support for Families in Financial Stress

As a result of Australian Government funding, Wee Care is able to provide limited assistance to families in crisis. Emergency relief is available in the form of food parcels and vouchers. However, due to the limits of this funding, it is only provided to families with children and should not be relied upon. Please contact us to see if you’re eligible.

Innovative Alternative for New Born Babies in the CP Sector

In partnership with the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, Althea Projects now deliver the first mother and new born baby assessment and support service in the North Queensland region. This is a pilot program which will run initially for six months. First Steps will have a significant positive impact on the safety, welfare and wellbeing of children accessing the program.
